About Me - Tanya Pilumeli – Author

I’d love to say I was born in an exotic foreign locale and traveled to out of the way places since I could walk but I can’t. So that is why I write. In reality I was born in 1973 in Geneva, Ohio, on Lake Erie. I earned an M.A. in English Literature at John Carroll University in Cleveland where I was also editor of The John Carroll Review, a Dj and promotions manager for WJCU, a founder of the women’s rugby team (yeah, that didn’t last long), and Helena in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

After teaching English at six different universities, I finally settled down in Geneva (again) with my husband, Alessandro, who is from Italy. We opened up an Italian restaurant there in 1999 and now have three beautiful children.

Giuseppe, six, is the oldest. He is all personality. If you meet him once, he’ll melt your heart, and you’ll never forget him. He has ambitions of being a rock star. Violetta, four, is my apprentice. She reads books to her preschool class and loves to paint. Although petite, she can definitely hold her own with her brothers. Dionisio is the youngest at three. We call him ‘little man.’ He’s tough as nails, but a mama’s boy. He even helps me do laundry and clean the toilet!

You’re probably wondering about now how I ever wrote a book. I’ve been writing stories and poetry since I could write, and at a certain age you realize that life just keeps coming at you. If you really want to do something (or in my case, need to do it for your sanity) you just do it. So with the help of my unconditionally loving mother, Jackie, I took two hours a Saturday to write. (Barring a child that was sick, had surgery, or being out of the country.)

Amazingly, I finished! And so I read all the right books, went to conferences, researched agents and wrote beautiful query letters (even praising the poetry of one.) But who am I? Who knows me? Nobody. So no one responded. I calculated that at this rate, I’d be lucky if an editor saw my manuscript on my 90th birthday.

A few months passed, and then my dad died unexpectedly from a heart attack. This made up my mind. How much time did I have? I had publishing background. I had editing background. I had even started my own business before. Thus was born Fava Press.

Why Fava? No real reason. I dream a lot, and one night about ten years ago I dreamt I had a company named Fava. It just seemed to fit.

Currently there are other books in the works, but for now I’m out and about spreading the word about The DragonFly Keeper. If you are a voracious reader and love exotic places and adventure then you’ve found the right place. If you are an agent or an editor, by all means GIVE ME A CALL!
